Arizona State Police Retired - Robert A. Trias (USKA Founder)
Certification & authorization of Master Trias as 10th Grade Black Belt and signed by Makoto Gima (Judan), Takazawa Masanao (Kudan), Grandmaster Ogura (Kudan), T. Sun Hop Young (Hanshi), Suzuki Masfumi (Judan), Uehara (Judan), Sifu Yu Chi Chan (Hsing Yi Judan), & Yamazaki Masanao (Kudan).
In 1942, during World War II, Grandmaster Robert A. Trias was stationed in the British Solomon Islands. At this time Grandmaster Trias was a middleweight boxing champion for the United States Navy. During this same time a Chinese missionary, Master T'ung Gee Hsing, was seeking the conversion of the Solomon Island natives. Trias decided to train with Master Hsing in Hsing-Yi. From then on, Karate became his way of life. Hsing had traveled to the Solomn Islands from Okinawa in 1940, where he had trained with Choki Motobu.
Later during the war, in 1944, while stationed in Singapore, Mr. Trias continued his training in the martial arts with his second instructor Hoy Yuan Ping at the Hock Keng Temple. Hoy Yuan Ping's instructor was Hashinosuka Fukuda, of the Tenshin Shinjo School of Kempo ju-jitsu in Japan. Karate was first introduced to the United States by Grand Master Trias in 1945 opening the first dojo in Phoenix, AZ.
Master Trias was promoted to 9th degree black belt on July 16, 1964 by Grand Master Yasuhiro Konishi, the Chief Instructor for Choki Motobu. Grand Master Konishi also appointed MasterTrias as the International Style Head of the Shur-ryu system. He was promoted to 10th degree black belt in 1983, by Grand Master Makoto Gima, the Chief Instructor for Gichin Funakoshi.

the United States Martial Arts Association.
